The Reward of the Righteous

Welcome, dear friends, to another enriching Bible study! Today, we turn our hearts and minds to one of the most glorious and hope-filled topics in all of Scripture: the magnificent reward awaiting the righteous. After exploring the temporary sleep of death, we now look forward to the ultimate awakening—not just to life, but to an eternity of joy and peace in the very presence of God. What an incredible future God has prepared for those who love Him and follow His ways! Let's open our Bibles and discover the beautiful promises He has for us.

The Invitation to Inherit the Kingdom

Our journey begins with a powerful invitation from Jesus Himself, found in His description of the final judgment. He speaks of a prepared kingdom, an inheritance for His faithful children.

Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

Matthew 25:34

Imagine hearing those words from the King of kings! This isn't just an invitation to a temporary feast, but to "inherit the kingdom." The word "inherit" suggests something that is rightfully ours, a legacy passed down. It speaks of a deep, familial connection with God. This kingdom wasn't an afterthought; it was "prepared for you from the foundation of the world." This reveals God's eternal love and His original plan for humanity—to live in perfect harmony with Him. This inheritance is described elsewhere as "an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you" (1 Peter 1:4).

This inheritance is eternal life, a gift freely given to those who believe in Jesus. As John 3:16 tells us:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3:16

It's a promise of life that never ends, a life lived in the fullness of God's presence, truly a blessed reward for the righteous.

Our Heavenly Home: A Place Prepared

But what does this "kingdom" or "everlasting life" look like? Jesus gives us a glimpse into the personal nature of His preparation for us.

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

John 14:1-3

What comforting words! Jesus understands our anxieties and offers peace. He assures us that He is personally involved in preparing a dwelling place for us. The phrase "many mansions" (or dwelling places) suggests ample room and a glorious, beautiful home. This isn't just a spiritual state; it's a real place where we will dwell with Him. His promise, "I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also," points to His second coming as the moment when this promise is fulfilled. We look forward to that glorious day when He gathers His children to Himself, to take us to the home He has prepared.

This home is often referred to as the New Jerusalem, a city of incredible beauty and purity, coming down from God out of heaven:

And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

Revelation 21:2

It's a city built by God, a testament to His love and power, and it will be our eternal dwelling place.

God Dwells with His People: No More Sorrow

The ultimate reward of the righteous is not just a place, but the very presence of God Himself, and the complete eradication of all the effects of sin and suffering.

And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

Revelation 21:3-4

This is the breathtaking climax of God's plan! The "tabernacle of God is with men" means intimate, unhindered communion with our Creator. He will dwell with us! All the pain, suffering, and sorrow that have plagued humanity for millennia will be gone. "No more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain." What a promise! The "former things are passed away," replaced by a new creation, a new heaven and a new earth:

Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

2 Peter 3:13

In this new world, righteousness will be the governing principle, and we will serve God perfectly, seeing His face:

And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.

Revelation 22:3-4

This is the ultimate destiny for the righteous: eternal life, a prepared home in the new earth, and the glorious, unhindered presence of God, where every tear is wiped away, and joy reigns forevermore. This is the "eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began" (Titus 1:2).

Reflection Questions:

  1. Matthew 25:34 speaks of inheriting a kingdom "prepared for you from the foundation of the world." What does this tell you about God's long-term plan and His love for humanity?
  2. How does Jesus' promise in John 14:1-3, "I go to prepare a place for you," bring comfort and hope to your heart?
  3. Revelation 21:3-4 describes a future where God dwells with His people and wipes away all tears. What aspects of this promise are most meaningful to you personally?
  4. Considering these promises, what steps can you take today to live in a way that aligns with the hope of eternal life with God?

Conclusion:

The Bible paints a breathtaking picture of the reward awaiting the righteous. It is an inheritance of eternal life in a kingdom prepared by God Himself, a personal dwelling place in the New Jerusalem where Jesus will come to receive us. Most wonderfully, it is an eternity spent in the very presence of God, where every tear is wiped away, and death, sorrow, and pain are forever banished. This is the glorious ultimate destiny for those who accept God's gift of salvation—a future filled with unending joy, peace, and perfect communion with our loving Creator on a new earth. What an incredible hope we have!
