The Hope of Eternal Grace

Welcome back, friends! As we continue our journey unpacking God's amazing grace, we've seen how His undeserved favor blesses us in the present. But grace isn't just for today; it stretches far beyond our current circumstances, reaching into the distant future and offering us a glorious, eternal hope. Today, we'll explore how God's grace assures us of a future with Him, culminating in the blessed hope of Jesus' promised return and the gift of everlasting life.

The Blessed Hope: Jesus' Glorious Appearing

One of the most thrilling aspects of God's grace is the future it promises. It doesn't just save us from our past; it secures our future. The apostle Paul eloquently captures this hope:

Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

Titus 2:13

This "blessed hope" is the very cornerstone of Christian expectation. It's not a wishful thought, but a firm promise rooted in God's character and His plan of salvation. Grace leads us to anticipate the personal, visible return of Jesus Christ. This isn't just an event; it's the culmination of God's redemptive work, where He will finally bring an end to sin and suffering and establish His eternal kingdom.

Jesus Himself promised this return to His disciples:

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

John 14:1-3

This promise, fueled by His grace, gives us comfort and purpose. We are not left without hope in a world full of challenges. Grace empowers us to look beyond the present trials to the glorious future when our Savior will appear. Every believer, through grace, is invited to share in this glorious appearing.

Access to Future Glory Through Grace

How do we, as sinful beings, have such a magnificent future hope? It's all by grace. Paul explains this beautifully:

By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Romans 5:2

Grace is not just a concept; it's a standing, a position we hold before God through faith in Jesus Christ. Because of His sacrifice, we have "access" to God's favor and to the hope of future glory. This means we are assured of a place in God's eternal kingdom, not because of anything we've done, but because of what Christ has done for us. This access gives us reason to "rejoice in hope of the glory of God." Even in our present struggles, we can find joy in the certainty of what awaits us.

This hope is a precious gift, sustaining us through life's journey:

For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

Romans 8:24-25

Our hope is not based on what we can see or achieve, but on God's faithful promises. It's an anchor for the soul, firm and steadfast, reaching into the presence of God Himself.

The Assurance of Eternal Life

The ultimate expression of God's eternal grace is the gift of eternal life. This is the destiny grace secures for us.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3:16

Eternal life is not something we earn; it is a free gift, offered through grace to all who believe. It's a life transformed, a life reunited with our Creator, a life free from the curse of sin and death. This promise is not vague; it's a certainty for those who embrace God's grace:

And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that ye believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

1 John 5:11-13

Through grace, we can have assurance of this incredible future. It’s not about being perfect, but about trusting in the perfect grace of Jesus Christ, who died to make this gift possible.

Living in Light of This Eternal Hope

Knowing that such an amazing future awaits us through grace should profoundly impact how we live today. Our hope in Jesus' return and eternal life inspires steadfastness and purpose.

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 15:58

We are called to live with our eyes fixed on the future, yet actively serving God in the present. This eternal grace gives us courage to face challenges, knowing that our ultimate victory is secured. It encourages us to hold fast to our confession of faith:

Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

Hebrews 10:23

God's grace ensures that His promises for our future are true and trustworthy. We can live with confidence, knowing that He who began a good work in us will carry it on to completion until the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6).
