The Law as a Reflection of God's Character

The Law as a Reflection of God's Character

Welcome, dear friends, to another enriching session in our study of God's design for life and relationships. As we explore the biblical understanding of sexuality, it's vital to first understand the very foundation upon which God's design rests: His divine law. But God's law is far more than a set of rules; it is a beautiful, profound reflection of His character. To truly know God is to understand the principles that govern His kingdom, principles that flow directly from who He is. Today, we'll delve into how God's moral law reveals His holy, just, and loving nature, and how it is intrinsically woven into the fabric of creation and our very beings.

A Perfect and Pure Reflection

When we consider God's law, the Scriptures paint a picture of something truly divine, perfect, and trustworthy. The psalmist beautifully describes the nature of God's statutes, echoing the very character of their Author:

The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.

Psalm 19:7-8

Notice the words used here: "perfect," "sure," "right," "pure." These aren't just descriptions of a legal code; they are attributes of God Himself. A perfect law can only come from a perfect God. A sure testimony reflects an unchanging and reliable God. Right statutes come from a God who is righteous in all His ways. And a pure commandment reveals a God who is utterly holy and without blemish. The law, therefore, is not an arbitrary list of do's and don'ts, but a mirror reflecting the unblemished glory and steadfast nature of our Creator.

An Enduring and Unchanging Standard

The permanence of God's law speaks volumes about the unchanging character of God. Jesus Himself affirmed the eternal nature of these divine principles:

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

Matthew 5:17-18

Jesus' words assure us that the moral law of God is as enduring as heaven and earth themselves. It is not subject to trends, cultures, or the passage of time. This reflects God's own unwavering character, for the Bible tells us that He is without "variableness, neither shadow of turning" (James 1:17). Just as God is the same "yesterday, and to day, and for ever" (Hebrews 13:8), so too are the principles that flow from His very being. This unchanging nature of the law provides a stable moral compass in a world that is constantly shifting.

The Law Written on the Heart

Beyond the written tablets and scrolls, God's law is also impressed upon the very conscience of humanity. The Apostle Paul explains this profound truth:

For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

Romans 2:14-15

This passage reveals that God's moral standard is not just an external code, but an internal compass. Even those who have never encountered the written commandments often possess an innate sense of right and wrong, a "work of the law written in their hearts." This conscience, bearing witness to moral truth, is a testament to God's universal governance and His righteous character imprinted upon all humanity. It shows that the principles of His law are not foreign to us, but resonate with a deeper, God-given understanding of morality.

A Character of Holiness, Justice, and Love

The Scriptures continually affirm that God's law embodies His holy, just, and good character:

Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.

Romans 7:12

These divine attributes are not separate from God; they are inherent to Him. "Righteous art thou, O LORD, and upright are thy judgments" (Psalm 119:137). His law is a perfect expression of His perfect being. "He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he" (Deuteronomy 32:4). Furthermore, because "God is love" (1 John 4:8), His law must also be an expression of that perfect love. Every commandment, every principle, ultimately flows from His boundless love for His creation, designed for our ultimate good and flourishing.

Conclusion

The law of God is a magnificent mirror reflecting the unchangeable, holy, just, and loving character of our Creator. It is perfect and pure, enduring through all ages, and even imprinted upon the conscience of every human being. Understanding God's law in this light helps us to see it not as a burden, but as a loving revelation of who God is and His perfect design for our lives, including our sexuality. As we seek to live according to His will, we are not just following rules, but aligning ourselves with the very character of God.
