Our Business: A Beacon of Light • ~10 min read
Dear friends, welcome to another enriching study as we explore what it means to integrate God's principles into our business endeavors. Today, we're focusing on a powerful truth: a business that operates on biblical principles isn't just a place of commerce; it can be a truly transformative force, reflecting God's character and profoundly influencing its environment for good. Imagine your business not just as a means to an end, but as a beacon of light, bringing positive change and demonstrating God's way to the world. Let's dive into the Scriptures and discover how this transformation takes place.
The journey of transformation begins within us, in our minds. The Apostle Paul gives us a profound instruction that applies to every area of our lives, including our professional and business practices:
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Romans 12:2
In the world of business, it's easy to be conformed to prevailing patterns—patterns that might prioritize profit above people, expediency above ethics, or competition above compassion. But God calls us to something different. He calls us to a radical transformation, starting with a renewed mind. This means actively choosing to think differently, to evaluate business decisions not just through the lens of market trends or quarterly reports, but through the lens of God's will. It means asking, "What would honor God in this situation? What reflects His character?" When our minds are renewed by God's Spirit and His Word, our business practices will naturally begin to reflect a higher standard, setting us apart and making our enterprise a light in the marketplace.
The concept of transformation is further elaborated by Paul, describing a practical process of change that applies directly to how we conduct ourselves and our businesses:
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Ephesians 4:22-24
What does it mean to "put off the old man" in a business context? It means shedding practices and attitudes that are driven by self-interest, greed, dishonesty, or exploitation. It could involve letting go of deceptive advertising, unfair labor practices, cutting corners on quality, or prioritizing personal gain over the well-being of employees and customers. These are the "deceitful lusts" that corrupt and hinder true transformation.
Conversely, "putting on the new man" means actively embracing righteousness and true holiness in every business transaction and relationship. It means:
When a business consistently puts off the old, worldly ways and puts on the new, godly character, it becomes a living demonstration of God's principles. This transformation isn't just internal; it's visible and impactful.
A business transformed by God's principles becomes a powerful witness. Jesus Himself said:
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Matthew 5:16
When a business operates with integrity, compassion, and a commitment to excellence rooted in God's character, it stands out. It demonstrates that there's a better way to do business—a way that honors God and blesses humanity. This kind of enterprise can transform its industry by setting new standards, inspire its employees to higher ideals, and positively impact its community through ethical practices and genuine care. It’s not just about what the business sells, but how it conducts itself. It becomes a testament to the power of God to transform not only individuals but also their enterprises.
Through such a business, God's love and righteousness can be tangibly experienced by employees, customers, suppliers, and the wider community. It can be a place where people experience fair dealings, honest communication, and genuine care, reflecting the very character of God. As Philippians 2:14-15 admonishes, "Do all things without murmurings and disputings: That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world." A godly business embodies this light.
The vision of a godly business is not merely about achieving financial success, but about becoming a powerful instrument for God's glory and a force for good in the world. By allowing our minds to be renewed (Romans 12:2) and by consciously putting off ungodly practices and putting on righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:22-24), our businesses can be transformed. They can shine as beacons of light, demonstrating God's principles and drawing others to glorify our Father in heaven. May we all strive to operate our enterprises in such a way that they truly reflect the transformative power of God's character.
