Our Business: A Beacon of Light • ~10 min read
Dear friends, in our journey of faith and enterprise, we often think about the immediate impact of our work. We strive for excellence, honesty, and service in the present. But what about the future? What kind of mark are we leaving on the world, not just for ourselves, but for generations to come? Today, we'll explore how our business endeavors, when consecrated to God, can build a lasting legacy of righteousness and blessing that extends far beyond our lifetime, ultimately honoring Christ.
The Bible speaks to the enduring nature of righteousness and the blessings it brings, even for future generations. It encourages us to live in a way that creates a positive inheritance, not just financially, but spiritually and morally.
A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.
Proverbs 13:22
This verse from Proverbs offers a profound insight. It's not just about material wealth, though that can be part of it. A "good man" leaves an inheritance that encompasses wisdom, integrity, and a good name—principles that are far more valuable than any bank account. When our business practices are rooted in God's principles, we are building a reputation for honesty, fairness, and generosity. This legacy of character, established through our work, becomes a spiritual inheritance for our children and even our grandchildren. It's the example we set, the values we uphold, and the way we conduct ourselves that truly endures.
The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.
Proverbs 20:7
Here, we see the direct connection between a parent's integrity and the blessing upon their children. Our business is not just a personal venture; it's a platform through which we can demonstrate God's character to the world and to our families, creating an environment where future generations can thrive in faith.
Psalm 112 paints a beautiful picture of the man who fears the Lord and delights in His commandments. Notice how his righteousness and his business are intertwined with lasting prosperity and a legacy that benefits others.
Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.
Psalm 112:1
His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.
Psalm 112:2
Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.
Psalm 112:3
These verses are incredibly encouraging! They tell us that a life lived in reverence for God and obedience to His commands brings not only personal blessing but also a blessing upon our descendants. "His seed shall be mighty upon earth" suggests strength, influence, and a positive impact. When we operate our businesses according to God's principles—with integrity, honesty, and a spirit of service—we are laying a foundation for our families to be blessed and to make a positive difference in the world. The "wealth and riches" mentioned here are not merely material, but encompass the richness of a life lived in God's favor, which includes spiritual and relational prosperity. Most importantly, his "righteousness endureth for ever," meaning the good character and godly principles he embodied continue to have an impact long after he is gone.
Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.
Psalm 112:6
This verse emphasizes the stability and enduring remembrance of the righteous. A business built on Christ-like principles will not be easily shaken by worldly storms, and its positive influence will not be forgotten.
Our businesses are not just means to an end; they are platforms for God's glory. The legacy we leave isn't just about what we accumulate, but about how we use our resources and influence to point others to Christ.
Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
Proverbs 3:9
So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
Proverbs 3:10
When we honor God with our business and its profits, we acknowledge Him as the source of all blessing. This act of giving and stewardship sets an example that can inspire others and build a legacy of generosity and faith. The blessings that follow are not just for us but can be used to further God's kingdom and bless our communities.
And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.
Colossians 3:17
This principle applies directly to our business. Every decision, every transaction, every interaction can be done "in the name of the Lord Jesus." This means acting with integrity, love, and a desire to reflect His character. When our business operates with this mindset, it naturally becomes a beacon of light, leaving a positive legacy that points others to Christ.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Matthew 5:16
Our business, through its ethical practices, quality products or services, and generous spirit, can be that shining light. It becomes a testament to God's transforming power, inspiring others to glorify Him.
Our business endeavors are more than just a means of livelihood; they are powerful tools in God's hands. When we consecrate our work to Him, striving for integrity, generosity, and service, we are not just building a company; we are building a legacy. This legacy is one of righteousness and blessing that extends beyond our lifetime, impacting our children, our communities, and ultimately bringing honor and glory to Christ. May our businesses truly be beacons of light, reflecting God's character and leaving an enduring inheritance of faith for generations to come.
